Students should be able to work on their own scientific project using experimental laboratory techniques. |
| Inhalte/Content |
New advancements in genomics and proteomics have led to discovery of new proteins. However, very little is known about newly discovered proteins that do not share a common ancestor with a well known protein. These proteins are called de novo or orphan proteins. Even state of the art computational methods like AlphaFold are highly reliable only for proteins that have some resemblance to known proteins. This module offers a chance to work on and develop methods to understand some properties of de novo (orphan) proteins using laboratory techniques. Open projects can be found at https://bornberglab.org/resources/projects/. Basic molecular biology and statistical analysis (such as t-tests) skills are strongly recommended. Knowledge of basic bioinformatics is also useful.

| Methoden/Methods |
Projects would involve basic molecular biology techniques and S1 microbiological work with Escherichia coli bacterium. Applicants must attend an S1 introduction at the Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity before working in the lab.
